Prayers for my family

Husband:
Pray that your husband will be humble and quick to agree with God about his sin. Pray that his heart will be tender toward the voice of the Lord.

Psalm 51:2-4
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Micah 6:8
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Children:
That God would keep them from the evil one.

John 17:15
I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

Late again!

I totally spaced Family Friday this week! There is really nothing new to report, we had a slow week, the kids have colds so we stuck pretty close to home.

Ella has figured out the arms part of crawling, and she has figured out the legs part of crawling, but hasn't quite put the two together yet. So she is in the inchworm stage! She also started sitting up, but is still using her arms to prop up.

Haley is "working" on her laptop. I don't know where she gets this idea, because we don't have a laptop, and I don't "work" on it. Maybe from when my mom was visiting? Nana had to work on the computer some while she was here. Either way, if you click on it you can see she is wearing her fancy shoes, Cinderella dress and all her jewels. She got so upset this morning because she couldn't wear a dress to church, she threw a fit in her room for about 5 minutes. She isn't a big fit thrower, so that was a major one for her. Anyway, since she couldn't wear a dress she wanted to wear her BIG fake jewels to church "So I can be more beautiful and fancy!" We compromised and put some extra fancy hair do-dads in her hair. Where does she get this stuff?!

Jeremiah chillin' in his chair. He is actually trying not to eat the last few bites of his dinner.

And Mikey goofing off in Ella's jumper. I want to post some video of her in the jumper, because she really goes to town, but alas I can't figure out how to get video off of my new camera...

Anyway, as usual, I hope your week was as wonderful as ours.

What do George Bush, Barack Obama and Jay Leno have in common?

You thought it was the start of a great joke, didn't you!? But no, they were all in my dream last night. Jay Leno and I were washing our hands together in the bathroom, and he invited me to meet the other two men for dinner. We rode in a limo with Obama and his wife to some packed restaurant, where we had to climb over a ledge to meet President Bush. Then the Prez and I ordered chicken strips and beer. Obama had sushi and wine. Weird, I know. In reality I just thought that would be a super catchy title for a blog post and had to do it!

Spin the bottle

It is cold and rainy outside again today. We have had to turn our heater on at night, otherwise the house gets too cold! It is AUGUST, although it feels like May. I got this rainy day idea here. It is spin the bottle, pre-school friendly! The kids took turns spinning the bottle and where ever it landed was the book we read. They liked this, I liked this, you will too.

On the bright side, we haven't had to spend our days moving sprinklers around and watering the garden, the rain has done our grass and plants good!

Election year advice...from Dr. Seuss

My Uncle Terwilliger on
the Art of Eating Popovers

My uncle ordered popovers
from the restaurant’s bill of fare.
And, when they were served,
he regarded them
with a penetrating stare…
Then he spoke great Words of Wisdom
as he sat there on that chair:
“To eat these things,”
said my uncle,
“you must exercise great care.
You may swallow down what’s solid…
BUT…
you must spit out the air!”

And…
as you partake of the world’s bill of fare,
that’s darned good advice to follow.
Do a lot of spitting out the hot air.
And be careful what you swallow.

Prayers for my family

Husband
Pray that your husband's relationship with God and His Word will bear fruit in his life. Pray that he will be a man of wisdom and understanding, fearing the Lord.

Prov 3:7
Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.

Prov 9:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Psalm 112:1
Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commandments!

Children
Pray that your children will be caught when they are guilty!!

Psalm 119:71
It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.

I'm stuck

I found this great free pattern for a sewing machine cover here. It looks very easy, with only straight lines, and I thought it would be perfect to get some practice in. So I cut out all the pieces and got the first three steps done, now it is time to sew on the side panels...and I can't figure it out. If you are out there...and you know how to sew...and you can read this pattern...and you can explain it to me...that would be grand!

**EDITED**
Well, I showed it to Michael and in about 3 seconds he had it figured out. So it is finished, and I like it!

Blueslide

**Edited to say**
Melissa C. if you are reading this I forgot to mention how much we missed you guys this weekend...A LOT!! Heather B. and the gang were asking all about you, drop her a line sometime!

Each year our church hosts Family Camp at Blueslide Resort in Cusick, WA. This is a six year tradition and I have only missed it once. The first three years Michael was deployed and we made him signs saying we missed him, with each letter held by a different person in our church, then we would send him a picture of us holding them up. We love family camp, and this year, with four kids, we opted for a cabin instead of a tent. It was SO much easier, we will not tent camp again, as long as the kids are little. Maybe when they are old enough to do all the setting up, tearing down, cooking and cleaning, we will try again! Here are a few pics from the weekend! You just might see some familiar faces!

We had all four kids in one room, the three older ones on a queen size bed, and Ella in the closet, in her pack and play. The first night Mikey fell off once, and got himself stuck under the bed, we woke up to him hollering for help! The second night Haley fell off twice and Jeremiah, who was in the middle, fell of once too?!

This is a picture of the border, the mowed down trees all the way up the mountain represent the 49th parallel, and the U.S./Canadian border.

I wanted to post a few more pictures, but it has taken me all morning just to get these, so I think I am going to bag it for now! We had a great weekend and love spending time with our church family. They are the best friends we have in Spokane, it makes me think of how much I will miss them if we decide to move.

Late for Family Friday

My intention was to post before we left to go camping on Friday, but I didn't make it! So here is last week in pictures!

Mikey is learning to ride his bike without training wheels. It is probably too small for him, so now we know what to get him for Christmas! He is doing a great job and only needs us to hold it while he gets started, and he is a little wobbly with the steering still.

Haley got a bucket stuck on her head, we have no idea how she got it on there. Michael had to get wire cutters and cut the handle in order to take it off her head! Should I really think of these things as Kodak moments?!

Jeremiah really liked the marionberry pie we had for my birthday.

Ella is trying to crawl, she gets up on all fours and rocks back and forth. She has the knee part figured out and can lunge at things, but she is still working on the hands part of it all.

We got 10 ears of corn out of the garden on Monday and ate them with dinner that night! We finally got some ripe tomatoes. And a few zucchini, no squash. The carrots are still too small to pick.

Hope your week was as wonderful as ours!

Cricut giveaway

Oooooh, if only I could win this one! A Cricut machine is on my wish list, given that the one I want costs $300, it will probably stay on my wish list! The one that Vanilla Joy is giving away is a smaller one, but I could still cover my house in those super-cute vinyl stickers!

You can go enter the contest here. Check out their creative date ideas, kids face painting, and family fun sections. I will be posting and linking about many of their upcoming giveaways, so bear with me.

Zuchinni problems

This is our garden, after a scorching hot day, desperately needing to be watered. It is small, but fun. We have yellow squash, zucchini squash, tomatoes, carrots, and sweet corn. Last year the garden was a breeze, it just grew and grew and grew. This year we started out with corn that wouldn't stay standing, about everyday I went out and had to stand at least a couple of the plants up and bury their roots again. Now my zucchini are getting to be about 3 inches long, turning yellow and shriveling on the vine and same with the squash. What is a girl to do?! So I googled it, and turns out the fruits aren't getting properly pollinated. The solution, to hand pollinate! What?! Are you kidding?! Nope. Read on:

"A common reason for rotting and shriveling zucchini is lack of pollination by bees. Pollination is absolutely required for fruit set. Without pollination, the fruit that grows will yellow, shrivel, rot and die. Three solutions: Get some bees. Attract some bees or hand pollinate.

The zucchini has a male flower and a female flower, which must be pollinated in order for you to get proper fruit. To hand pollinate, break off a male flower, remove its petals to reveal the yellow pollen on its pistol, then roll the pollen onto the center stigma of the female flower.

You tell flowers apart because female flowers are larger and have a baby fruit behind their petals. The male flowers grow on a long stem and are smaller."

Now seriously, WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT?! But I did it, I wen't and hand pollinated a squash and two or three zucchini. But I have to do this much more often, since day before yesterday there are already 4-5 more shriveled up zucchinis on my plants. I get all itchy and red and rashy from digging around in the plants, and I hate the way the smell, so this part of gardening is not fun, but what a lesson for the kids! I love picking tomatoes though, I think they smell great! And the smell reminds me of the HUGE gardens my grandpa used to have in the summertime.

Project #6...Check!

The boat oar-growth chart project is finally checked off of my crafty-to-do-list! It honestly took me about half an hour, not including the times I had to stop and let paint dry. I should've spent more time prepping the oar before I painted it, but I just spray painted right over the top of the existing paint, mural and all. Which took much less time, but the finished product has a few more flaws. And I didn't have any good painters tape, so I freehanded the stripes. Which means they are not super perfect, but again, good enough! AND I put the vinyl name sticker on crooked. AND I still need to paint over the nail holes, but I can't find where I put the white paint. Overall it was fast, easy, and I am satisfied to finally have it done!

Laugh, Learn, Love: Theme of the Week Challenge

The theme this week is on helping your children get along. This is a tough one, isn't it? The only thing I can offer up is to encourage your kids when you find them doing something praiseworthy for the others. On the flip side when they say or do things that aren't kind or gentle we stop them, remind them of (my favorite) Philippians 2, "do nothing out of selfish ambition, consider others more important than yourself." (very loosely paraphrased) Then we practice what the right thing to do or say would be. BUT sometimes it feels like we do this about 10,000 times each day, and it feels like we aren't getting anywhere. AND I don't catch everything they do wrong, AND I am not 100% consistent, especially when tired, run down, "too busy," etc. There you go, now you know I am not perfect, please don't stop reading my blog.

I really have a desire to see my kids be friends with each other as they grow, post your ideas too and link to Laugh Learn Love, can't we all use the help and encouragement?

Prayers for my family

Husband:
(I am not listing any complaints about my husband here, these are from a prayer calendar made by another woman!)

Pray that your husband will grow spiritually and consider his accountability before the Lord. Pray that he will guard his heart by developing spiritual disciplines--Bible reading and study, prayer, meditation, scripture memorization, etc.

2 Peter 3:18
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Proverbs 4:23
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Children:
Pray that your children will fear God and serve Him only.

Deuteronomy 6:13-14 (vs. 15 is what happens when we don't!)
It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you, for the LORD your God in your midst is a jealous God, lest the anger of the LORD your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

Family Friday!

Late last week we had some friends visit from out of town. And I would show you this really great picture of all 7 of our kids together, but it was on the camera that leaped from my pocket at the lake. Anyway, it was great to see the Jones' family, we miss having them in our neck of the woods.

Then there was Haley's birthday party at Clear Lake. I think it was a hit, we had BBQ for lunch and then just played the day away at the lake. Again, I would show you some photos, but.........

I cannot believe my little girl is four years old. You can see from the photo that four years old also comes with attitude.

There was the airshow, I already posted photos of the Blue Angels, and they were awesome. BUT there was the new F22, sorry Blue Angels, but you got outdone. That airplane can do things that airplanes shouldn't be able to do. My husband tried to explain exactly how and why this plane can flip like a pancake, front to back, but it was way over my head. A. maze. ing.

The three older kids went to Kennewick from Saturday until Wednesday. It was a nice long break, but it is quiet and boring around here without them! I spent all day on Tuesday shopping! It was terrific and I got all the little things I needed to finish up some of my projects.

We had our 8th anniversary, terrific! And the next day we went to pick the kids up from Papa and Grammy's house. We spent the day with Michael's sisters and the cousins. His oldest sister is in town from Houston with her girls. And Michael's aunt came to see Ella.

Michael was awarded with NCO of the Quarter this week. This is the 7th time he has gotten the award in 4 years. And as usual we are so proud of him.

And of course, we got a new camera. It is the same model, just the newest version. Thank you to my husband, who gave up buying things for his Jeep project for me to have a new camera. Now that is LOVE!

They stole my idea!

My mom sends me a Better Homes and Gardens email that is always packed with good ideas. Yesterday, I came across a picture of some file folders decorated with pretty paper. Funny thing, I already have those in my house! I decorated them and hung them on the wall. Each day before we begin "school" the kids draw a picture of something they are thankful for and put it in their "thankful pockets."

8/14/08

Sticker book

The kids get stickers EVERYWHERE we go, grocery store, wal-mart, swim practice, birthdays, all the time. And they love it! We usually just bring them home and toss them in our decoration box and bring them out for making cards. Today I made this little book from construction paper and yarn, decorated the cover very simply and let Haley put some stickers in it. She played with the book for over an hour, peeling the stickers off the strips and placing them in the book. And this is great pre-k stuff too!

8th Anniversary

Today is our 8th wedding anniversary! So much has happened in the last eight years, it is hard to believe our lives could've changed so much. We have lived in two different states, four different houses/apartments. Got a dog, and got rid of the dog. Had four kids, and kept all of those! Michael has been deployed or TDY 13 times. (For all of you that say I get pregnant every time Michael leaves, there is proof it isn't true, I don't have 13 kids!!) Michael switched jobs within the military once. I worked for the first 3 years and then started staying at home, that was a huge transition for us, and not as easy as I anticipated! I also went to school for the first 3 years, and dropped out when I got knocked up!! Michael went to school and got his bachelor's degree. We have worked with the high school youth group, the college group, the young marrieds group, taught an FPU course and are now running AWANA. Whew!

There might be some more major changes coming in the near future as Michael decides to stay in the military or get out. I have excitement and anxiety about either decision, and God is just walking me through the process of trusting Him. Michael is very slowly and very methodically making a decision, praying, seeking LOTS of wise council and that gives me a huge amount of encouragement...most of the time!!

Today I got to go shopping around town, gathering things for my crafty-to-do list. I will be posting projects when I get a new camera! Then Michael got off of work early and we took a nice nap together, went out to dinner, went camera shopping and then came home to watch some of the Olympics. We had a nice conversation over dinner about our favorite memories. His was the cruise we went on in 2005. Mine are from this last year or so, we have just really grown in our marriage and sort of "come into our own" so to speak. It was a lovely day. And I forgot to mention that the three older kids are at the grandparents house...so we did this all WITHOUT kids!!

The title of my blog "Who Would've Thought?" comes from the fact that 10 years ago, I was kind of rebellious. If you knew me then, and knew me now, you wouldn't believe I was the same person. Obviously I can only thank God for the changes in my heart, without Him it would be impossible. But He sent Michael to help me along the way, and I am so very thankful for him. Eight years later I am still amazed that he fell in love with me.

Back to the basics

God has been bringing me back to the basics lately, seriously back to the basics. Like the Sunday School song "Read your Bible, pray everyday, pray everyday, pray everyday...and you'll grow, grow, grow! Don't read your Bible, forget to pray..and you'll shrink, shrink, shrink."

Here is a good post (from another mom) about making excuses and what God thinks of them!

There are two things I want this post to be about. First, some things I have learned about praying for my family. And second a really cool, back to the basics, study I found.

At MOPS I got this prayer calendar for kids, with a different quality to pray into your kids each day of the month. It lists the character trait and then some verses to back it up. For example:

Honesty
Proverbs 12:22
"Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal faithfully are His delight."

So then this is how I pray for my kids to be honest:

Lord, teach (insert child's name) about lying lips. Show him/her how detestable they are to you, and cause him/her to hate them as much as you do. Help him/her delight in men who are truthful, and to be a man/woman of truth.

Then I can also pray the same scripture with my kids before bed that night, so they are learning God's word, God's character and what He expects from us, all at the same time they are learning how to pray. Isn't that fabulous!! God is so good. What an awesome way to use scripture in areas that my kids are struggling with.

And for the study, you can read more about it here.

It is called "Firm Foundations, Creation to Christ." It is written for non-Christians to gain a Biblical understanding of the history of the world, and an understanding of the basis for salvation. It is so simple, it is teaching me all the things I never learned in Sunday School! (I didn't become a Christian until I was about 18yrs old.)

8/9/08

Dear Christian,

I will always cherish the time we had together. Deep inside I hold many memories for you and your family, that will last forever. Although we were together for 3 years, there were some serious flaws in our relationship. Looking back you were very careless with me, dropping me on concrete, misplacing me, letting your kids slobber on me. You never liked my slow response time, or the way I took pictures for you without a flash. Nevertheless, we made some beautiful photographs together, captured some lovely memories. It is hard for me to tell you this, but I am taking the plunge. I am going to leap from your pocket and explore the depths of Clear Lake. I hope this isn't too sudden, and even though there are still two months worth of pictures yet to be uploaded, you should know, it isn't you, it's me.

Love always,
Your Nikon Coolpix L6 Camera

Family Friday!

First off, the Blue Angels have been practicing in my backyard for two days now, it is AWESOME!! We live on an Air Force Base and there is a huge airshow this weekend, at which the Blue Angels will be performing, and they are literally practicing in my backyard! I took these pictures from their website, they are way too fast for me to shoot a good photo, but this is the kind of stuff they are doing.

Although I think it is the coolest thing ever, Jeremiah is terrified. He spent all day yesterday crying because of the noise. He is our cautious one, and things like cats, bugs, lakes, heights, and loud airplanes scare him. When he wasn't crying, he was shaking and clinging for dear life to anyone who hold him. Poor boy. You would think he would be used to the noise from planes by now, since we do live on an AFB, and usually he doesn't cry about it, just kind of whimpers and runs inside. But these are huge, loud, fast planes, there are 5 of the Blue Angels and the noise goes on for several hours a day, plus they are flying really close to our house. The other planes usually stick pretty close to the flight line.

Ella found her feet! Babies chewing on their feet is one of my favorite things, it is so cute. Maybe I am just jealous because I am barely flexible enough to touch my toes anymore!? She is also trying to crawl, she gets up on all fours and rocks a little bit. Oh my, she is growing so fast. It makes me so sad, and so full of joy all at the same time.

Haley is posing to be beautiful again! She is getting ready for her bday party this weekend. After the swimming pool cancelled on us, we decided to go to the lake for the day and have BBQ. We are going to rent a paddle boat and have cake and presents. She is super excited, and I am too. I think a day at the lake with friends and family sounds fun and relaxing.

I set Ella down with Mikey one day while the other kids were going down for nap. When I came back he had given her the little stuffed animal and was reading a book to her. Isn't that adorable?

And here he is helping me vacuum. A friend of ours gave him this kid size vacuum so he could help around the house. And he does. He vacuums his room. Today he thought he would help by vacuuming the living and dining room for me. My floors must've really needed it for the 5 year old to notice!

Anyone ever heard of a Pluot before? I saw them at the grocery and thought we would try them. They are just like plums but a little sweeter and when I cut into it I was super impressed by the beautiful shade of pink on the inside.

Hope your week was as wonderful as mine!

Blog question

Can someone explain how to put a list in my sidebar with different categories for blog posts? I like it when other people have them in their blogs so I can check out the categories I am most interested in, like kids crafts, or home decorating while weeding out the stuff that doesn't pertain to me.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Swish and swipe

Clorox wipes are my current favorite household helper right now. I got this tip from Flylady, which I used to frequent. She is all about decluttering your life, although her website is a little cluttery itself. Recently I found Home Sanctuary and am enjoying her Christian perspective and her daily tasks, check it out. There are lots of books to recommend on the whole organizing your life subject, but I really like Sidetracked Home Executives, very easy to read and practical.

Anyway, the tip is to swish and swipe your bathroom every morning. This is where the Clorox wipes come in handy. After you are done in the bathroom for the morning, take a couple wipes and wipe the base of your toilet, your toilet seat and the area behind it, the inside of your sink and your counter tops. This seriously takes about 2 minutes, maybe more the first few times as you are probably cleaning off build-up (at least I was!). But if you don't have an extra two minutes, then you shouldn't be sitting there reading my blog right now!

Vinyl do's and don'ts

This is one of the projects on my crafty to-do list. I am going to paint the boat oar and put the vinyl name at the bottom, and use it as a growth chart. This is a vinyl DO!

This is a vinyl DON'T

Definitely do!

Definitely DON'T!

Absolutely DO!

Absolutely DON'T.
